The union representing City of Toronto inside workers is strongly urging city council to reject calls for a downtown casino.

A survey of the union’s approximately  20,000 members found 67 per cent of them oppose a casino outright. 81 per cent say  it would increase poverty and crime.

CUPE Local 79 president Tim Maguire says his members are  front-line community workers who are worried that  the social impacts of a casino could overwhelm  Toronto’s already strained social support system.

Meanwhile – Toronto mayor Rob Ford is still  calling for a casino as a way to fund transit expansion after Metrolinx  released 11 possible funding options for transit which include some taxes and tolls.
