He’s being remembered for his striking beard and as a hero to AIDS activists.

Former U-S Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koophas died at age 96 in New Hampshire.

Koop created shock by advocating condoms to battle AIDS.

Koop Institute senior scholar Dr. Joe O’Donnell says despite Dr. Koop’s celebrity, he was always approachable.
Doctor Koop was also a harsh critic of smoking during his work in the Reagan and the first Bush administrations.
