An expert on newborn babies says the case of an infant declared dead who then came back to life should serve as a warning to all doctors.

The baby was born on the sidewalk Sunday morning as the mother was walking to Humber River Hospital. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and rushed mother and daughter to the hospital. But the baby was showing no vital signs and declared dead. A while later, police standing near the baby noticed she was moving.

Patrick McNamara is a neonatal specialist at Sick Kids’ Hospital, where the baby is now being cared for. He says newborns react differently to the cold than older children and doctors should keep that in mind when treating very young children.

The hospital is conducting an internal review. Health Minister Deb Matthews promises the results will be shared with other medical facilities in the province.
