Ontario’s outgoing Finance Minister says gridlock in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area is so bad it’s holding back the entire Canadian economy.
Dwight Duncan calls it “probably the greatest impediment to productivity improvement in the Canadian economy.”
He plans to leave politics, and offer his seat to leadership candidate Sandra Pupatello. But he tells the CBC that, if he were to stay in the Finance ministry, he would make gridlock a priority in the next budget.
Duncan also says it’s time the federal government stepped up to the plate. He points out Canada is one of the few countries in which the federal government doesn’t take an active part in transit funding.
Toronto has one of the worst gridlock problems in North America. The regional transit agency, Metrolinx, has a plan to provide relief. The price tag is $50-billion.
