Here’s news to discuss with your doctor, if you regularly take aspirin.  New research out of Australia has found a link between regular use of acetylsalicylic acid and an increased risk of vision loss with age.  The study of nearly 2400 men and women found those who routinely took aspirin were more likely to develop age related macular degeneration.

A-B-C News chief health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser says the risk is only slight but worthy of concern for some patients.  “The risk is small.  It’s only 3.5%, but if you add that to what we know about aspirin causing internal bleeding, you really need to make sure you’re someone who’s going to benefit from being on aspirin.”

Doctors will sometimes prescribe aspirin as a blood thinner.

The results of the study are published in JAMA Internal Medicine — a leading medical journal.
