Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic lost his round of 16 match to Roger Federer, who beat the Thornhill, Ontario native 6-4,7-6,6-2.  The hard serving Raonic started out strong, even taking the former number one to a tiebreaker in the second set.  But Federer was too good, as he advances to his 35th straight grand slam quarter final match.  Federer has won 4 of his 17 major titles at Melbourne Park, where he has reached the semifinals or better every year since first winning the Australian Open in 2004.  The last time Federer failed to reach the last eight at a major was at the 2004 French Open, where he lost in the third round to Gustavo Kuerten.  Federer next plays No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a finalist here in 2008.

The 22-year-old Raonic, seeded 13th, missed another chance to be the first Canadian man into a Grand Slam quarterfinal in the Open era.

Toronto’s Daniel Nestor lost in the third round of the men’s doubles at the Australian Open.  Nestor and new partner Mahesh Bhupathi fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Simone Boelli and Fabio Fognini.  Nestor is a 40 year old veteran and has won the most doubles titles in history.
