There is further reaction on the changing “dying with dignity” debate in Quebec. Earlier this week, an expert judicial panel made recommendations on how to proceed with legalizing medically assisted dying for people who are suffering at the end of their lives.
Sheila Noyes is past President of “Dying with Dignity Canada”. She told the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back, the Quebec government is poised to implement these recommendations as law, which would be a groundbreaking move. “Quebec was one of the provinces that stopped prosecuting physicians who performed abortions. And eventually, the law then was changed across Canada. I’m sure there would be issues with this with the federal government. But at this point, Quebec is using the healthcare legislation and I believe they would not have done this unless they were very sure they were on solid ground in doing so.” Euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal in Canada under the Criminal Code.
