More than 2,000 times in the past five years, a range of Ontario health – care  professionals including doctors and dentists have been  “secretly cautioned” for mistakes or improper behaviour.

A report in the Toronto Star says the warnings  were  mostly prompted by patient complaints and were  handed down by the colleges that regulate the province’s  health workers.

But  the newspaper  says patients have no way of finding out from the colleges if their health-care providers have been cautioned.

That’s because a provincial law governing the  health professions does not require the information to be made public.

The Star says  Health Minister  Deb Matthews has said she will look into the issue and talk to the colleges because  the world is changing in terms of expectations around transparency and it’s important that the institutions  keep up with  expectations.
