Toronto public elementary schools will be closed tomorrow because of a planned walkout by teachers.
The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is planning what they’re calling a “day of protest” tomorrow. The union says protest is legal under the charter of rights and freedoms.
But the government says teachers can’t walk out when they have a legal contract. Premier Dalton McGuinty says the government will apply to the Ontario Labour Relations Board to block the walkout.
But the Toronto District School Board has announced it will close all elementary and junior high schools tomorrow because it can’t guarantee teachers will be there.
The seven candidates to replace McGuinty all say the dispute with teachers is a priority. They’re calling on teachers to suspend any job action until a new Premier is chosen at the end of the month.
