It has long been considered a classic in Canada, but now it’s gaining recognition in China.

Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables has been called one of the 50 most influential novels in China this year by the country’s national publishers association.

And it could become number one.

The first official translation of Anne into Mandarin was published late last year. It was an initiative by a PEI company called Anne in China Incorporated. Its president is Duncan McIntosh, whose association with Anne stretches back to when he was a dancer in the chorus of the musical version of Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Festival.

McIntosh says about 10,000 books are published in China each year. So making the top 50 is an impressive achievement.

Votes for the most influential novel in China continue until Christmas Day. The winner is expected to be announced by the end of this month.
