Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is piloting a Russian space craft on a complicated trajectory to catch up to the orbiting space lab.
Hadfield and two other astronauts lifed off from Kazakhstan yesterday morning.
During his five-month visit, Hadfield will become the first Canadian to command the orbiting space lab when he takes over in mid-March. Former Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk says being away from family can be tough on astronauts who spend a long period of time on the space station. Thirsk says it will be up to Hadfield as commander to maintain the morale and focus of the crew.
Thirsk spent six months on the space station in 2009 — a record for a Canadian astronaut. He made his comments from the Canadian Space Agency where he watched Hadfield’s launch yesterday.
