Ontario’s elementary school teachers are threatening more strike action next month that could include leaving classrooms.

The union representing the province’s elementary teachers says they will ramp up strike action to protest against the government’s controversial Bill 115 imposing a deal that freezes their salaries.

The union will be in a legal strike position next month. Union President Sam Hammond says it’s up to the province to give teachers something to work with and avert the escalation of job action.

Hammond says the provinces has given the teachers no choice because the new law imposes such rigid parameters, it’s making it impossible to bargain with local school boards.

Education minister Laurel Broten says teachers have the right to carry out their threats. But she says Bill 115 contains measures that will “make sure students’ safety is not put at risk.”
