The big-screen adaptation of Saskatoon author Yann Martel’s best-selling novel Life of Pi opens across North America today.
Suraj Sharma stars as Pi, a boy who finds himself marooned on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. Sharma didn’t expect to land the role. He wasn’t even planning on auditioning. He went to the audition just to keep his brother company. But he says he wasn’t intimidated making his acting debut with Ang Lee as director. On the contrary, he says he found the star director “comfortable” to work with. Sharma says, when a great director puts his faith and trust in you, you give him everything you’ve got.
Author Yann Martel says fans of the book will find some differences in the film. What they have in common is a spirit of adventure.
