The sweet smell of cookies baking will no longer waft over south Etobicoke. And some 550 employees will be out of work when the Mr. Christie’s Bakery shuts down next year. Workers were told about the plan yesterday afternoon by Mondelez Canada, which became owner of the factory earlier this Fall. City councillor Peter Milczyn says the company has already made it clear they hope to rezone the 27-acre property from employment to residential land. Mondolez spokesman Stephanie Cass says the main reason for closing the Christie’s plant is an outdated facility. The Lakeshore location of Mr. Christie’s originally opened in 1948.
