A high-sugar diet  disrupts the brain’s cognitive abilities, leading to poor learning and memory retention.

That’s  the suggestion in a  study from the David Geffen School of Medicine at U-C-L-A.

Researchers says too much sugar affects the transmission of information across cells.

They  looked at high sugar consumption in rats and focussed less on naturally occurring  fructose in fruits  and more on high-fructose corn syrup.

It  acts as a preservative and sweetener and is found in a variety of processed foods from soft drinks and baby food to salad dressings and condiments.

The study is  published in the Journal of Physiology.
