Even before Dalton McGuinty decided to resign, a published report says he had planned to suspend the legislature this week in order to reach a wage freeze deal with Ontario’s nearly 500,000 unionized public servants.   A senior government official tells the Toronto Star McGuinty wanted to foster secret talks that began a week ago without the supercharged backdrop of a heated minority assembly.  But his decision to prorogue the legislature seems to be backfiring with union leaders.  OPSEU president Smokey Thomas says any interest he may have had, evaporated when Dalton McGuinty progrogued.

NDP MPPs are expected to hold a news conference this morning to launch their next step in the fight to oppose prorogation. Gilles Bisson is the NDP house leader.  He says, “What’s going on here is that we’re not going to shed the light on the premier’s office, and his decision and the staff’s decision not to release those documents.  And number two, this is about setting the backdrop to have a leadership race for the Liberal party, when there’s (sic) no questions in the house, there’s no legislation brought forward, and the issues of Ontarians can be kept at bay by only having the government deal with those issues in their own way, outside the scrutiny of this legislature.”

It could be months before a new Liberal leader is elected and the legislature is resumed.
