The controversial new teachers legislation is about to undergo a court challenge.  Presidents with the Ontario Public school teachers unions plan to launch legal action today at the University Avenue Courthouse in Toronto. They say Bill 115 takes away the rights of teachers to bargain collectively.  But Education Minister Laurel Broten says the government is confident the legislation will withstand any court challenge.  She says, “we’ve ensured that we’ve acted in a way which is accordance with the right to collective bargain.”  Broten goes on to say public school teachers unions were offered the opportunity to negotiate a deal, but walked away from the bargaining table.  The Ontario Progressive Conservatives helped the minority Liberal government pass the bill which imposes a two year wage freeze and fewer benefits for teachers.  The New Democrats predict it will be struck down by the courts, costing taxpayers more in the long run.
