Premier Dalton McGuinty’s gamble to win a majority government has come up short.

As expected, the Liberals won yesterday’s byelection in Vaughn. But Kitchener-Waterloo went to the New Democrats. NDP leader Andrea Horwath says voters there saw through McGuinty’s attempt to manufacture a crisis with the teachers’ contracts.

Kitchener Waterloo had been held for more than 20 years by Conservative MPP Elizabeth Witmer, who left to accept McGuinty’s offer to head the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. PC leader Tim Hudak issued a statement saying public sector unions bought the election for the NDP.

The result leaves the Liberals one seat shy of a majority.
