TORONTO BUDGET BATTLE LOOMING BETWEEN CITY AND POLICE

The Toronto Police Services appear ready to ignore budget directions from the city again.

The City Manager wants all departments to freeze their expenses for next year. But the Finance Director of the Police Services told the city budget committee his department wants to spend ten million dollars to hire 200 new officers.  Angelo Cristofaro says the department will need the new recruits to maintain the same number of cops on the beat as older officers retire.

Last year, in the midst of across-the-board budget cuts, the Police Services was the only department that received a budget increase.

City Council will have to find $200-million in savings to balance the books for next year.
