Ontario’s opposition parties say the government calling the Legislature back early to deal with teachers contracts is a blatant attempt to win two byelections next month.

The minority government has called MPPs back from the summer break two weeks early to debate a bill that would impose a two-year contract on the province’s teachers.

The Liberals say if they don’t legislate a new deal, automatic raises kick in September first that will cost almost half a billion dollars.

But the opposition parties say the Liberals have known about the deadline for months and are playing eleventh-hour politics to try to win byelections on September 6th in Vaughn and Kitchener-Waterloo. The Liberals need to capture both seats to secure a majority.
