The man who recorded the song that became the theme of the Summer of Love has died.

73-year-old Scott McKenzie died on Saturday in Los Angeles after suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system.

McKenzie recorded San Francisco [Flowers in Your Hair] in 1967 for the first Monterey Pop Festival. It was written by John Philips of the Mamas and the Papas because of concerns that the mass gathering could become violent. The song was meant as a message of peace, and became the theme, not only of Monterey Pop, but of the entire flower power movement.
