Germany’s chancellor has given Prime Minister Harper what he was looking for — strong public support for a trade deal with the European Union.

But Angela Merkel also gently but firmly noted the need to reduce high carbon emissions from Alberta’s oilsands.

Merkel backed Harper’s desire for a Canada-European Union pact by year’s end, by promising to push for a speedy conclusion to the negotiations when she returns home.

Canada estimates the deal could boost the economy by 12 billion dollars a year.
