Oakville has declared tanning beds off-limits for anyone under the age of 18.
The unanimous decision by Oakville’s town council was made over concerns that indoor tanning can lead to skin cancer. Research from the Canadian Cancer Society shows people under the age of 35 who use tanning salons have an 87 per cent greater risk of developing melanoma.
Several other municipalities in the GTA are also looking at prohibiting the use of tanning salons for those under 18.
Oakville Councillors hope the Ontario government will introduce a province-wide ban.
