It turns out the Olympics are not bad for theatre after all.
Last year, Andrew Lloyd Webber predicted the London Games would be a “bloodbath” for the West End theatre district. But figures indicate box office receipts at Webber’s five London theatres have actually risen 25 per cent since the Games began.
Webber is playing host to productions of Matilda the Musical, The Wizard of Oz, War Horse, Shrek, and his own Phantom of the Opera.
Webber says, “I’m the one who said it would be all doom and gloom in the West End, but I have been proved wrong and I couldn’t be more delighted.”
