If you live between Yonge and the Humber in Toronto, your garbage pickup day will have a new look to it.
Mayor Rob Ford’s hotly-debated push to privatize garbage collection in Toronto takes effect today when a private company, Green For Life, begins collecting trash from 165,000 homes between Yonge and the Humber.
Green For Life already handles collection in Etobicoke.
The Chair of the Public Works Committee, Councillor Denzil Minan-Wong, says the city will be keeping an eye on Green For Life’s fluorescent green trucks to make sure pickup goes smoothly. He urges residents to call the city’s 3-1-1 hotline if there are any problems.
Pickup days remain the same for western Toronto, but pickup times might change.
The City says private collection will save $11-million a year.
Areas to the east of Yonge continue to be served by unionized city employees.
