Hundreds turned out on Thursday to protest plans for an 8 turbine wind farm in the central Ontario community of Clearview, west of Barrie. Among the demonstrators was Zoomer Radio’s Dale Goldhawk. He says the most compelling statement of the day came from Charlie Tatham, Chair of the Collingwood Airport Services Board. Tatham explained that 4 of the 8 “50-storey” wind turbines are too close to the airport, in an area where no structure should be higher than 150 feet, according to Transport Canada rules. Tatham says if the turbines are built near the airport, it will only be a matter of time before an aircraft collides with one of the turbines. But Tatham and other members of the Board say Transport Canada will not step in and stop the turbines from being built there. All Transport Canada can do is order the airport to somehow change the flight paths of approaching aircraft. But the airport says this just can’t be done.
