At the age of 97, he is the most wanted Holocaust war criminal, accused of taking part in the deportation of Jews in World War 2. Laszlo Csatary has been taken into custody in Budapest, Hungary and charged with war crimes. He spent years living in Canada after he was convicted in absentia for war crimes in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and sentenced to death. It was the following year in 1949, that Csatary arrived in Nova Scotia. He became a Canadian citizen in 1955 and worked as an art dealer in Montreal. In October of 1997, Canadian authorities said the then 82 year old had left the country, apparently bound for Europe, before they had a chance to decide his fate in a deportation hearing. According to a summary of the case released by prosecutors, Csatary was named in 1944, chief of an internment camp at a brick factory in Slovakia, where 12,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps. He’s been charged with unlawful torture of human beings which carries a sentence of life in prison.
