The Great One says he’s thrilled to share his latest award with two of his childhood heroes. Wayne Gretzky was in Toronto Monday night. He’s one of five people who received the inaugural “Order of Hockey in Canada”. Both Jean Beliveau and Gordie Howe were also honoured, although neither were present. Number 99 says it doesn’t matter how much he’s personally accomplished in hockey, Gordie Howe remains his hero. Gretzky says, “when I met Gordie at 10 years old, he was nicer, better and bigger than I ever imagined. He’s still my idol. He’s still the best player that played the game. I’ve developed a really nice relationship with him over the years and I still get tongue tied when I’m around him!” Gretzky’s hockey playing days are over, and following his tenure as head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, he said a return to hockey is not in the cards. But he says everything he has in his life is because of hockey and the National Hockey League. Gretzky calls it the greatest game in the world.
