It was a messy early morning commute Thursday.

An overnight storm that brought significant amounts of rain to the GTA forced the closure of a section of the Gardiner due to flooding.

One motorist had to be rescued after a vehicle was caught in over two feet of water on the Gardiner.

In the early morning hours, the westbound Gardiner was closed from the Lake Shore ramp west of South Kingsway to Park Lawn but all blocked lanes have since re-opened.

Strong wind gusts also downed trees across the city.

And as a result of the overnight thunderstorm activity  about 2,000  Toronto Hydro customers are without electricity  in the area extending from   Rosedale Valley Road to the south, Rosedale Heights to the north, Mount Pleasant to the west and Bayview to the east.

There is also an outage pocket in Willowdale affecting fewer than 900  customers.
