It was 130-years ago today, June 14th 1894, an audience gathered for the very first time at Toronto’s Massey Hall.

The very first performance they enjoyed was Handel’s “Messiah.”

The hall was commissioned by prominent industrialist and philanthropist Hart Massey as a memorial to his music-loving son Charles and a gift to the citizens of Toronto.

Over the years Massey Hall has played host to the likes Enrico Caruso, Oscar Peterson, Joni Mitchell and of course Gordon Lightfoot who played the hall more than 170-times.

By the way, the top ticket price for that opening day performance 130-years ago was $1.
