They are calling this a first for the opera world; technology that creates braille surtitles for vison impaired opera-goers, without the interference of audio descriptions.

The technology was developed by the general director of the New Zealand Opera.

It sends braille surtitles to a user’s personal braille-reading machine at the same time as the sighted audience is reading the surtitles on screen.

Until now, the primary option for vision-impaired opera attendees has been through audio descriptions, which can interfere with the music.
