Changing the name of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa Square may end up costing a lot more than originally anticipated.

The rising cost for the controversial project is expected to go before Mayor Olivia Chow’s Executive Committee next Tuesday.

City Clerk John Elvidge said in a recent letter, the design and fabrication and installation of new signage is expected to come in somewhere between $105,000 and $200,000.

But he also said additional potential costs associated with the renaming of the square have been identified, and may run an extra $300,000 – $600,000.

That includes branding, programming, and diversity equity and inclusion costs such as board and staff training, supplier awareness and ”talent development,” according to the city clerk.

”These investments will help confront anti-Black racism and support reconciliation.”

City Council voted last December to rename Yonge-Dundas Square on the advice of an advisory committee that picked Sankofa Square.
