In a surprising move, the general director and head of the Canadian Opera Company, has left with no reason provided by the COC.

The opera company would only say Perryn Leech’s departure was ”by mutual agreement.”

David Ferguson, former president and chair of the board of directors, has been appointed interim general director.

Leech leaves after three-years and only weeks after announcing the COC’s upcoming 2024-25 season.

He tried to broaden the company’s repertoire by programming new productions of lesser-known works.

Leech also pushed to bring in younger operagoers but the COC kept facing financial challenges like so many.
