A documentary about folk legend Buffy Sainte-Marie, which debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, has won an International Emmy Award.
The film was made before her Canadian Indigenous roots were called into question.
“Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On,” won the Emmy in the arts programming category.
Producers describe the film as a retrospective of Sainte-Marie’s life and career.
However, the 82-year old singer-songwriter’s ancestry was challenged in a TVĀ investigation last month, that presented several identity documents suggesting she is actually Italian-American.
Saint-Marie has denied the accusations.
