Israel says it is officially at war, as its soldiers continue to battle Hamas fighters in the streets of southern Israel and launch airstrikes on Gaza.
Israel’s Security Cabinet confirmed the declaration of war Sunday, a day after an unprecedented surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group.
Israeli media are reporting at least 600 people have been killed, while Palestinian officials say more than 300 people have killed in Gaza in Israel’s retaliation, with thousands more wounded on both sides.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the country will exact a heavy price from its enemies, while Hamas leaders have said they were prepared for further escalation.
Meanwhile, in northern Israel a brief exchange of strikes with Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group raised fears of a broader conflict.
Global Affairs Canada says there are currently over 1,400 registered Canadians in the state of Israel, and 492 in the Palestinian territories, but notes that so far there are no signaled Canadian casualties or injuries.
