After giving them until Thanksgiving to come up with something, the Trudeau government has revealed what it calls the ”initial commitments” from the top five grocery chains.

Costco, Empire, Loblaw, Metro and Walmart have all agreed to start rolling various measures at their stores that will result in lower prices in ”the coming days and weeks.”

For example, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says they will implement ”aggressive discounts across a basked of key food products that represent the most important purchases for most households.”

The minister is quick to add that’s just the beginning of ”a number of actions” being taken.

If these are not deemed enough by Ottawa, Champagne says the government will take additional action .

A ”grocery task force” will be set up within the Office of Consumer Affairs, that will monthly monitor grocers’ commitments and action taken by others in the industry.
