The Berlin State Opera has found its next music director.
The Berlin city government has chosen 64-year old German conductor Christian Thielemann for the job just a few months after Daniel Barenboim ended his three-decade reign.
Thielemann previously served as music director of Berlin’s Deutsche Opeh and the Munich Philharmonic and has been the chief conductor of the Statscapella Dresden since 2012.
Barenboim is credited with leading the State Opera, which is located in what was once East Berlin, to world renown after German reunification.
Thielmann will officially begin his term next year.
