The renowned tenor, who announced earlier this month that he had been diagnosed with incurable bile duct cancer, has died.

Stephen Gould had performed at many of the world’s great opera houses.  The condition forced the singer withdrew from the Bayreuth Festival in Germany this summer.

Gould’s agent confirms the singer died Tuesday in Virginia at the age of 61.
