If you’ve seen the viral video of the verbally abusive tirade directed at a TTC bus driver at Bathurst Street and Drewry Avenue last week, you’re probably wondering why calls by the operator did not result in an emergency response.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green explained to The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane what happened.

“That morning we had three other major things happening on the subway system. We had a track level injury at Sheppard West, we had a trespasser at Lawrence West, so the resources in that area had been deployed. It’s not an excuse, that just means we need to better identify where the opportunities are for us to increase staff if we need to, to make sure that we’re supporting our operators in the field, so it is something we’re looking at a deeper level, and we’ll speak to our union about that as well.”

A man has since been arrested and is facing several charges.

In the full video, the man filming makes numerous references to the driver’s race and at one point calls her a welfare recipient. He also states that the driver thinks she is a gangster and she decides who she lets on the bus.
