There’s progress to build enough housing to fix the issue of affordability, but Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says nearly 3.5-million new units are still need by the end of the decade.
That’s over and above what’s already in the pipeline.
That’s the gist of CMHC’s new report which updates its initial outlook in June of last year.
At the time, the housing agency felt the country was on track to build about 2.3-million more units by 2030, but that just over 5.8-million would be needed to adequately address supply.
That meant a gap of about 3.5-million.
Now CMHC says there’s slightly been progress, however another 3.4-million units over and above what’s currently planned.
Ontario makes up most of the shortfall with a gap of 1.48-million, which is down from 1.85-million forecast last year.
