The former federal cabinet minister, responsible for introducing the Canada Health Act, has died.

Monique Begin,  the former academic and cabinet minister from Quebec, also secured the child tax credit before leaving politics and returning to academia.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Begin for making her mark on the country

Former federal N-D-P leader Ed Broadbent called her not only a leader in the cause of gender equality and bringing universal health care to Canada, but “a leader in almost all aspects.”

Monique Begin was 87.
