Toronto’s mayor says the city is committed to improving road safety as students return to class.

“So while we prepare for a new school year, we should also remember our collective responsibility to keep kids safe,” Olivia Chow told those gathered outside a Toronto catholic school Tuesday morning, outlining how the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan will protect all students heading back to school this week, “that includes placing 850 school crossing guards and these are an extra pair of eyes. They keep people safe, they’re friendly and responsible.”

In addition, Mayor Chow says the city has installed 413 school safety zones and close to 12-hundred intersections across the city are equipped with a Pedestrian Head Start signal.

She says the city is also reducing the speed limit on local roads and public lanes in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough to 30 kilometres an hour on a systemic, ward by ward basis.

Toronto Police have also started a campaign looking out for drivers who choose to speed or drive distracted, impaired or aggressively.
