Yet another development in Doug Ford’s Greenbelt scandal.
After the premier called out an Ajax landowner for trying to flip land that was originally part of the Greenbelt, a representative for the landowner says it’s all a misunderstanding, as reported by the Toronto Star.
Ford expressed outrage that a company led by a China-based investor has listed for sale more than 100 acres on Kingston Road East in the Durham Region municipality.
The landowner’s representative says there was never any intention to flip the land. Rather, the real estate listing was to help find a joint venture partner with the experience necessary to help develop the property.
The premier issued a statement Tuesday saying the government is looking to return the land in question to the Greenbelt and warned any other developers of the same consequence of they try to sell what Was protected land.
Former Federal Conservative Deputy Leader Lisa Raitt told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer she does not believe putting land back into the Greenbelt would be an “out” for Doug Ford.
“I don’t think so at all,” Raitt explained, “I think the more you see this drip, drip, drip and the more they put the premier out to respond to it, the more it’s his issue and his problem. And if they keep putting the premier out to address this matter, he becomes the one who wears it. So, no I don’t think he gets to avoid anything and they really do have to think of another communication strategy than the one they’re putting out right now.”
News of controversy around the Ajax land comes in the wake of Ryan Amato resigning last week as Housing Minister Steve Clark’s chief of staff.
Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner J. David Wake says he will investigate Amato’s conduct after completing an investigation around Steve Clark’s behaviour related to the Greenbelt land swap.
The auditor general found developers with direct access to Amato purchased 92 percent of 7400 acres removed from the Greenbelt by the Ford PCs.
