Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane met in Edmonton to discuss the wildfires in the North.

Trudeau thanked the Alberta government and everyone across the Prairies for helping those forced from their homes in the Northwest Territories.

Cochrane says firefighters are battling more than 150 blazes in the Northwest Territories with six communities evacuated so far… with several others on high alert.

Meanwhile in B.C., the fire chief of Wilson’s Landing on the shores of Lake Okanagan says a fast-moving wildfire claimed the homes of 13 of 24 members of the fire department, including his own.

Paul Zydowicz says his team had been monitoring the blaze and helping residents of nearby Trader’s Cove reduce fire risks around their homes, but once the flames crested the mountain and began burning downslope, they knew it was a done deal.

Zydowicz says support from the tight-knit community has kept the firefighters going, despite two members being injured while battling the fast-moving blaze.
