Quebec’s college of physicians says some members are afraid to perform MAID (medical assistance in dying) because they fear retaliation.
The concern is found in a letter from college president Mauril Gaudreault that’s going out to all members.
However it does not spell out what kind of reprisals doctors fear or from whom.
The letter’s in response to a memo form the head of Quebec’s commission on end-of-life care, who says Quebecers are no longer seeing MAID as a last resort.
Dr. Michel Bureau feels an increasing number of such cases are pushing the limits of the law, and that there’s slightly more procedures that didn’t follow the law.
But the head of the provincial college of physicians says the regulatory body is not worried that more Quebecers are seeking medical aid in dying, pointing out how over 99% of such cases do follow the law.
