A jet went down over Russia killing everyone onboard, including Yevgeny Prigozhin; the Wagner mercenary chief.
State news agency Tass, citing emergency officials, says the plane carried three pilots and seven passengers.
Russia’s civilian aviation regulator says Prigozhin was on the passenger list but it was not immediately clear if he had actually boarded the flight.
The plane left Moscow and was en route to St. Petersburg when it went down in the Tver region, over 100-kilometres north of the capital.
The Associated Press reviewed flight tracking data showing a private jet registered to Wagner; that Prigozhin had previously used, taking off from Moscow when its transponder signal disappeared minutes later.
Prigozhin led a short-lived mutiny against Vladimir Putin in late June.
The Kremlin said he’d be exiled to Belarus, and that his fighters would retire, follow him or join the Russian army.
Soon after, the fighters set up in Belarus, but Prigozhin’s plane was reportedly flying between Belarus and Russia.
