The Toronto Wildlife Centre says it has rescued close to 90 ducks, after runoff from an industrial fire contaminated Mimico creek and left the waterfowl covered in potentially toxic residue.

The charitable wildlife rescue says once the residue-covered ducks’ health is stablized, they are bathed in soap and water using a toothbrush and hose to get rid of the potentially toxic substances on their feathers.

The organization says thousands of fish, a beaver, 10 ducks and a mink have died following a six-alarm fire at a chemical distribution facility in Etobicoke last week.

Members of the public are encouraged to call the Wildlife Centre if they see an animal in distress.
