Canadians can expect a temporary shortage of the popular drug Ozempic.
Manufacturer Novo Nordisk and Health Canada say ”intermittent shortages” of the one-milligram injection pen are likely from late this month to early October.
A company spokesperson attributes the disruption to a combination of global supply constraints and increased demand.
The 0.25-milligram and 0.5-mmilgram doses of injection pens remain available ”for patients with Type 2 diabetes across Canada,” adds the spokesperson.
Pharmacists are encouraged to limit refill prescriptions to a 30-day supply.
The federal health agency and Novo Nordisk are also closely keeping an eye on the supply of Rybelsus; the pill form of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic.
Health Canada’s reviewing the class of drugs used in diabetes and weight-loss medications, after reports they may lead to a risk of self-harm.
