Canada is joining Britain and the United States in sanctioning officials accused of corruption within Russia’s justice system.
These new sanctions include the notorious Basmanny District Court, a Moscow tribunal with a record of sentencing political opponents of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
In the past, the Basmanny court has sentenced Russian opposition politicians such as Alexei Navalny and Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Melanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, calls the sanctions a direct reaction to Russia suppressing dissent, as well as allowing for human-rights violations and state-sponsored violence.
Included in the sanctions are 15 Russian citizens and three entities, predominantly those involved in the judiciary and federally funded courts.
The people and entities listed are restricted from any financial dealings in Canada, or from visiting the country.
