In the wake of last year’s court finding overturning Bill 124, the union representing 16,000 unionized full-time and partial-load faculty at Ontario’s 24 public colleges, are getting additional salary increases.
They’ll receive 3%, 3% and 3.5% salary increases over 3-years, including the 1% increases originally awarded under the Bill.
The Ontario Public Services Employees says this ”does not sufficiently address the erosion of members’ wages as a result of inflation.”
College faculty will start their next round of bargaining in less than a year.
”We look forward to going back to the bargaining table,” says the head of the bargaining team, ”when our members can engage in free and fair bargaining without legislative constraints.”
The 2019 law capped wage hikes for broader public sector workers’ next set of contracts at 1%-a-year for three-years.
The government appealed after the court found the law unconstitutional, but many workers; including hospital registered nurses, have been awarded additional wages due to ”reopener” clauses in their contracts that were triggered when the bill was struck down.
